VeganMoFo #11: Vegan Pizza… On Long Island?!
Before I start let me just say that I am really excited about this post. Never before have I wanted to spread the world about an eatery! But I’m getting ahead of myself…
First, as Daiya cheese is sweeping the vegan world, the list of places to enjoy it keeps on growing. I noticed recently that not one but two pizzerias on Long Island had it! Both of them being in Rockville Centre, the city where I was born, just a quick drive down Sunrise Highway from my folks’ house. This struck me as odd at first. Long Island is not very vegan-friendly, with no exclusively vegan eateries along its long-ness. So on a recent trip, Three Brothers Pizzeria was on the top of my list for some dins. Imagine my delight when parking my economy rental half-way up the curb, I saw that the v-bomb was dropped in big large letters right there on the window!
We were greeted by one of the three brothers as we approached the counter and I ordered my personal pizza, whole wheat crust and vegan cheese, please. Without a bat of an eye he called the order out to the other pizza people. Wait, did he hear me right? “That’s vegan cheese, right?” I ask because I’m used to more of a hassle, more of a need for explanation/clarification. Nope, he got it right. My personal pie was delivered soon thereafter and I was in heaven. A fabulous pizza pie, all for me. Yum.
So content was I that my sister snapped my picture to cherish the moment. After eating half of the pie, I got the rest to go. But I was curious! How and why was this little pizzeria knocking my big vegan socks off? I pried. Inquiring whether they made vegan calzone as well, the young man working the register described their calzone rolls: cashew ricotta, Daiya, etc. I nearly fainted. It turns out this young man, a two year vegan, has created an amazing vegan menu addendum to this establishment’s regular one. 12″, 18″ and Sicilian pizzas with your choice of sauce, vegan cheese (They have Daiya and Teese!) and toppings, including veggie Italian sausage, grilled tofu and veggie meatball… creative and delicious-sounding specialty pies… heroes (seitan parmesan, veg meatball parmesan, etc), as well as rolls: tofu cutlet roll, tempeh roll, sausage roll. All this with more vegan options to come! Beyond all of these wonderful vegan choices, great service and a familial atmosphere, Three Brothers‘ prices deserve a mention too. They’re way reasonable! Three Brothers (and one presumed son, the vegan who’s rocking the Long Island pizza world) is absolutely a must. I know that I’ll be back soon.
In other vegan pizza news, I just happened to stumble across this sign on Hudson street in the West Village. Yes, it is true. The West side will finally get some Slice. Pizza, pizza, Daddy-O!

Holy crap, that pizza looks amaaazing. And the restaurant! What an awesome vegan menu. You'll have to share more food porn next time you visit. :)
yummy!
I can vouch for that authentic tomato sauce and LI style crust. Me gotta GO THERE!
Incredible news!!! I can't believe Long Island has this, especially since the demise of Zen Palate in Westbury. I need to see it to believe it. Or, definitely taste it to believe it, immediately! Thanks for spreading the word :D
Hey it's Jay, I'm the person who rung you up on Friday I think. Thank you so much for the review. I'm glad you enjoyed everything. I stumbled upon your blog after googling. We are going to be putting the vegan calzones on our vegan menu in additon to our new things. By the end of this month we will have a more expanded vegan dinner menu. We are also working on getting Vegan Treats. Again thank you so much for the awesome review!
That pizza is blowing my mind right now! So fabulous. It's super cool that you have a pizza place with such creativity towards vegan options. Love it!
This pizza was serious, since reading this blog post last week I've been to 3 Brothers twice and brought home pies for my wife and I in Queens. I also had a seitan parm hero. (freakishly good) Thanks for this post. I work and go to school on LI and gave up a long time ago on vegan food in LI, but this might give me some hope.

[...] Last time I was at 3 Brothers, the very vegan-friendly pizzeria on Long Island, I was floored. This time, with the arrival of their comprehensive vegan menu, I was positively giddy. Not to be over-dramatic, but 3 Brothers is, quite possibly, vegan heaven on Earth. The thing of fairy tales and folklore. The many pages of the pizzeria’s exclusively vegan menu options were overwhelming. We stared at its pages in awe and indecision, kind of confused. Here exists an eatery charmed in timing. In October, when I first reported on their inclusion of Daiya to their menu, I knew I had discovered a gem. Soon thereafter, the New York Times had published an article in their regional section, exposing the masses to the vegan magic happening behind their counter. [Of course their ridiculous science column op-ed piece promoting omni-mythos was soon to follow, written, disappointingly, by Natalie Angier, the science writer who had charmed and fascinated me with her previous work. Luckily, the Discerning Brute and Vegansaurus responded with logic and reason.] Two months or so later, on the evening of my second visit to 3 Brothers, I sat amongst a whole dining room of vegan parties, in the satisfying reward of feeling at the proverbial home… in my hometown.
