Old and New Years

Friday night crafting while watching old, sappy movies is kind of my new favorite past time. It is one of the many simple self-care rituals I have embraced. This time… another holiday wreath. A New Years wreath in a celebration of life, quantified. Like my Christmas wreath (and other wreaths to come), the decorative piece is a means to celebrate the corresponding holiday but also display some of the many vintage goodies. To get them out of storage in the back room.

But first, I tried to make the New Years mirror ball mosaic with a bunch of triangle mirrors and a Christmas ornament. It was a bit of a frustrating semi-fail but I was still able to incorporate it into the wreath well.

Here are the vintage goodies. Inside the shadow box are my grandparents’ old noisemakers. My mother bought them when around 1965 in Manhattan, where she worked at the time. They still had the price stamped on them legibly (25 cents). To the right are more vintage noisemakers I got from eBay knowing I didn’t have enough to bling out the large wreath ring.

Like the Christmas wreath, I started with wrapping the straw (cheapest in craft store and not styrofoam) with garland. The garland I bought when all the Christmas stuff was 75% off.

I didn’t take a lot of in-between pictures, so here it is coming along. I also picked up new a few New Years party hats and plastic champagne flute on clearance. I used the mini Champagne bottles that were toasted in the rain in Prospect Park with my BFFer on New Years Eve.

All done! Gosh, I love hot glue gunning.

My mirror ball with the wonky parts hidden.

Until next year, New Year.
